Trades on Day 1
Montreal traded Josh Gorges today to the Buffalo Sabres. He had been rumored to go to Toronto but refused a move to the Canadiens hated rival. He joined good friend Brian Gionta in Buffalo (Gionta signed with the Sabres today).
Winners and Losers on Day 1
- Dallas Stars
- Buffalo Sabres
- Florida Panthers
The Stars made great moves to add offense with their trade for Spezza and signing of Hemsky. They now have a formidable one-two punch. The Sabres added great pieces at the draft with Reinhart and Lemieux, then went and added the likes of Matt Moulson, Josh Gorges, Brian Gionta and Cody McCormick today. Depending on their defensive situation, the Sabres could really improve over the last two years. The Panthers added several pieces in Jokinen, Bolland, Thorton, MacKenzie and Willie Mitchell. They have some decent pieces like Buffalo. May surprise some people this season.
Alright, now for the losers:
- New York Rangers
- Detroit Red Wings
- Minnesota Wild
- Toronto Maple Leafs
The Rangers lost a lot of pieces today and in my opinion did not adequately replace them. Dan Boyle is a nice signing but they did not replace Richards, Pouliot, Brassard or Stralman. The Red Wings needed some offense and a big time defenseman. They got neither. I wouldn't count them out on making a trade in the coming weeks to get another defenseman. The Wild signed Thomas Vanek, but they really didn't address their issues in net or on defense. They could have greatly benefited from getting Matt Niskanen, and could still get Martin Brodeur to sure up their goal. Toronto...well, today proved that despite being a legendary franchise, the Leafs are on the severe decline.
